Unmedicated Because I Like A Challenge Shirt
Though there may be a moral imperative to reject the core tenets of manifestation, I don’t actually think it’s a useless practice. Back in 2011, the illusionist Derren Brown released a four-part series for Channel 4 called The Experiments. In one episode, The Secret of Luck, he investigated what made some people lucky, while others appeared to attract misfortune. What he found was that those who believed themselves lucky tended to be more open to certain opportunities, while those who were more fatalistic often missed those same chances (in this instance, a winning scratch card placed strategically on the ground). Maybe all those mystical deliverables were actually just me putting myself forward. I didn’t “manifest” a book deal—I simply wrote a book.Unmedicated Because I Like A Challenge Shirt
Some neuroscientists also give credence to the idea of manifestation—although again, with more logical explanations. James Doty, MD, neurosurgeon and author of Mind Magic, espouses the idea that manifestation is essentially “value tagging,” which refers to the brain’s unconscious process of assigning importance to certain goals, which in turn shapes our behavior and therefore outcomes. “When we direct our attention towards our desired goals, those goals become important to the brain,” he writes, adding that “Once the goal is embedded, our brain works like a bloodhound seeking opportunities to bring it into reality.” For me, these more logical explanations for manifestation create a certain conundrum: If we remove the concept of a “higher power” (in my case, the universe) from the process, then doesn’t that diminish the actual fuel behind the belief? Asking my own brain for a new house feels a little futile—even though that’s probably what I was doing to begin with. Despite it being irrational, it felt better when I was addressing something bigger than myself.
